Toronto -- The Independent Power Producers' Society of Ontario has responded enthusiastically to the appointment of Professor Ron Daniels as Chair of the newly-created Market Design Committee. "Dean Daniels has distinguished himself as a knowledgeable analyst of the Ontario electrical market, and as an effective convener of stakeholders in this field," said IPPSO Executive Director Jake Brooks. Professor Daniels is Dean of Law at the University of Toronto, where he led the University of Toronto Electric Power Project in 1995. The Market Design Committee was recently set up by the Ontario Government to help develop the details of the system which will soon replace Ontario Hydro's effective monopoly over power generation in Ontario.
"We are delighted to be involved in the Market Design Committee's work," said IPPSO Director Stephen Probyn, who was recently confirmed as one of the 16 members of the Market Design Committee. "We have worked with the Stakeholders Alliance on Competition and a diverse group of industry representatives to get to this point, where true competition is within reach."
Probyn stressed that "Ontario power producers want to move forward as quickly as possible to implement the government's plan for electricity competition, as envisioned in the white paper. Consumers will be the main beneficiaries as Ontario approaches the realization of an active and competitive power market. We will help in any way we can to move this agenda forward, under the leadership of Dean Daniels on the Market Design Committee."
IPPSO is a non-profit organization representing over 400 individuals and companies involved in independent power production and related efforts such as equipment supply, consulting and environmental work. IPPSO members produce power from cogeneration, small hydro, wind energy, waste wood and other sources. IPPSO's members currently produce about 10% of the electricity consumed in Ontario.
