TORONTO, Nov. 24 /CNW/ - Ontario's power producers today welcomed the announcement
of the final list of successful proponents and projects in response to the
recent Request for Proposals (RFP) for 300 megawatts of renewable electricity
generation, said David Butters, President of the Association of Power Producers
of Ontario (APPrO).
"Today's announcement is good news for supply, good news for Ontario's
power industry, and good news in terms of achieving the Ontario government's
commitment that five per cent, or 1,350 megawatts, of Ontario's generating
capacity come from renewable energy sources by 2007, and 10 per cent, or
2,700 megawatts, by 2010", he said.
He noted that APPrO fully supports the important role renewables can play
in Ontario's electricity supply and added that the RFP is vital to stimulate
growth in this area. "This is an important step in achieving a diverse portfolio
of generation in the province, and concrete action toward the government's
commitments that bodes well for new environmentally-friendly power in Ontario",
Butters said.
Butters noted that while RFPs are likely to be the primary means to bring
forward new investment in renewable energy for the foreseeable future, APPrO
looks forward to working with government and other stakeholders to develop
other options to achieve Ontario's renewable energy targets.
APPrO is a non-profit organization representing more than 100 companies
involved in the generation of electricity in Ontario, including generators
and suppliers of services, equipment and consulting services. APPrO members
produce power from co-generation, hydro-electric, gas, coal, nuclear, wind
energy, waste wood and other sources. APPrO's members currently produce over
95% of the electricity made in Ontario.
