RFQ bodes well for new environmentally-friendly power supplies
TORONTO, April 29 2004 -- Ontario’s power producers welcome the Request
for Qualifications (RFQ) for Renewable Energy released by the Ontario Government
on April 28 as an important step in addressing Ontario’s electricity supply
while at the same time moving forward on its commitment to a greater role
for renewable energy in Ontario’s energy mix. “APPrO has been advocating
the important role renewables can play. The RFQ is vital to stimulate growth
in this area, and is an important step in achieving a diverse portfolio of
generation in the province. It’s a concrete action toward the government’s
commitments that bodes well for clean air and more reliable energy supply.
We expect that it will bring out firm proposals for new environmentally-friendly
power in Ontario,” said David Butters, President of the Association of Power
Producers of Ontario (APPrO).
Butters said that the RFQ appears to be consistent with APPrO recommendations
to government, especially on the clarity of the evaluation criteria. And
he said that the RFQ is reassuring to power producers in a broader sense
because it implies a commitment to a market-based approach to lining up the
most economic options for renewable energy. “APPrO members look forward to
participating in developing the full RFP to ensure there is a package that
truly succeeds in stimulating investment. This includes elements of the package
relating to long term contracts, credit worthy counterparty, and an equitable
balance of risks,” he noted.
APPrO is a non-profit organization representing more than 100 companies
involved in the generation of electricity in Ontario, including generators
and suppliers of services, equipment and consulting services. APPrO members
produce power from co-generation, hydro-electric, gas, coal, nuclear, wind
energy, waste wood and other sources. APPrO’s members currently produce over
95% of the electricity made in Ontario.
