"SMALL POWER" TRADE MISSION TO INDIA

The need for power in India is growing rapidly at over 14% per year; and current demand far exceeds supply. India's enormous middle class and it's expanding industrial base are the leading factors contributing to the country's power shortages. Government incentives have been put in place to encourage the installation of conventional power like thermal and hydro. Additionally, there is increasing recognition and support for the "Small Power" sector including small hydro, alternative and renewable energy (biowastes, solar, wind), co-generation, captive power, local transmission & distribution, and recently, renovation and modernization (R&M).

The Indian market for power products, technologies, and services remains largely untapped. For example, of 2000 government identified hydro power projects, only 125 are under construction. Canada is recognized as a leader in advanced small power technologies with the capability to capitalize on India's vast power needs. A business guide, "A Canadian Business Guide To Small Power Opportunities in India" was developed on behalf of the FOCUS INDIA Small Power sector team, and is available to interested companies.

The Canada-India Business Council (C-IBC), is part of Canada's FOCUS INDIA strategic trade development team. C-IBC is working with CIDA, DFAIT, Natural Resource Canada's CANMET Energy Technology Centre, the High Commission in Delhi, and India's Apex trade association, the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), to lead a mission to India in December 1997. The Council helps Canadian firms enter India's power market through joint ventures, strategic alliances, and technology transfers.

REGIONAL TECHNICAL SEMINARS

Companies find great value in visiting the key cities of India to meet counterpart Indian companies first-hand. This approach allows Canadian firms to see organizations in their own localities. Networking opportunities exist with potential customers, clients, joint venture, technology transfers, and strategic alliance partners.

The cities of New Delhi, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad have been selected based on the rapid development of their industrial base and their respective state's progressive attitude toward power development and privatization.

The tour will run from December 1 to December 10, 1997. In addition, arrangements are being made for an additional two days in Mumbai to visit the PowerTech '97 Trade Fair (Dec. 11-12). This option is available for those who would like to represent their companies in a Canadian Small Power Session at the fair's conference. The mission will deliver technical seminars according to the following schedule and itinerary:

Mon. Dec. 1: Seminar in New Delhi, reception

Tues.-Wed. Dec. 2-3: Follow-up meetings, site visits and travel to Bangalore

Thurs. Dec. 4: Seminar in Bangalore, reception

Fri.-Sat. Dec. 5-6: Follow-up meetings, site visits and travel to Ahmedabad

Mon. Dec. 8: Seminar in Ahmedabad, reception

Tues.-Wed. Dec. 9-10: Follow-up meetings, site visits and travel to Mumbai, reception

Thurs.-Fri. Dec. 11: PowerTech '97 Trade Fair in Mumbai. Afternoon presentations by C-IBC Groups on "Canadian Small Power Capabilities"

End of Mission - Debriefing

Note: As another option, the State of Madhya Pradesh, supported by UNIDO, is holding INTECHMART '97 in Khajuraho December 10-12, focused on infrastructure projects, including the Power Sector. Call C-IBC for details.

Each city seminar will target select industry, association, municipal, and government executives. Invited Indian guests will be chosen based on the business interests of our Canadian participants. The seminar format will be the following:

Day 1:

0830-0930 Welcoming Breakfast and Regional Market Overview for Canadians by local experts

1000-1300 Canadian Presentations

1400 One-on-One Meetings

Evening Networking Reception

Day 2-3: Office and Site Visits for follow-up meetings, and travel to next city

There is a limit of 12 companies per city for these regional seminars. Though C-IBC will arrange for the flights and hotels in India, companies will be accountable for their own local travel, meals, and accommodation costs. Organizers are securing preferred rates. The

C-IBC facilitation fee is $1200.00 for C-IBC members and $1500.00 for non-members. Alternatively, a per city fee of $500.00 for members and $600.00 for non-members is available.
