Direction
to Ontario Power Authority to address Toronto’s electricity reliability
challenges a difficult but acceptable step
TORONTO, February 10, 2006 -- Ontario's power producers
said that today’s announcement by the Province that it is directing the
Ontario Power Authority to procure power in the downtown Toronto area
is a difficult but acceptable decision. According to APPrO President
Dave Butters, putting this new supply in place will provide substantial
electricity reliability benefits to Canada’s biggest city and its
financial centre while providing a base for additional urban growth and
intensification – issues highlighted in the Independent Electricity
System Operator’s (IESO) recent Ontario Reliability Outlook.
Butters said that while power producers generally prefer to see new
supply initiatives provided through competitive processes, in some
cases urgent public need has to be considered. “It’s no secret that
reinvesting in energy infrastructure in Ontario is one of the major
challenges facing the province over the next decade”, Butters noted.
“Neither supply nor conservation alone will meet the challenge, but we
are running out of maneuvering room in either area. Some tough
decisions will have to be made -- this isn’t likely to please everyone,
but sometimes you just have to get on with it.”
APPrO is a non-profit organization representing more than 100 companies
involved in the generation of electricity in Ontario, including
generators, suppliers of services, equipment and consulting services.
APPrO members produce power from nuclear, hydro, fossil, wind, waste
wood and other energy sources. APPrO’s members currently produce over
95% of the electricity generated in Ontario.
