Power
Producers welcome renewables directive
TORONTO, August 27, 2007:
Ontario's power producers welcomed today’s announcement by the Minister
of Energy of a directive to the Ontario Power Authority to procure up
to 2000 MW of clean, renewable power. The directive will give a major
boost to Ontario’s reputation as a world leader in renewable energy and
result in increased investment in new renewable sources of electricity
generation for Ontario in the coming years, APPrO president Dave
Butters said.
“Renewable energy is a world-wide growth industry. Consequently,
competition for renewable investment is intense, and lead times for
major project components like wind turbines and towers are getting
longer and longer so it makes sense for Ontario to signal to the
industry now what its renewable energy investment needs will be over
the next several years. Given the number of renewable energy projects
in states of readiness around the province and the levels of interest
in renewable, emission-free generation as well as the need for more
supply in Ontario, this should help to ensure that we meet our
renewable targets on time, and get the best price for them”, Butters
said.
Butters also noted that more stream-lined approvals and permitting
processes could further shorten the amount of development time and
reduce project costs and uncertainty, which would in turn result in
lower cost projects.
APPrO is a non-profit organization representing more than 100 companies
involved in the generation of electricity in Ontario, including
generators, suppliers of services, equipment and consulting services.
APPrO members produce power from nuclear, hydro, fossil, wind, waste
wood and other energy sources. APPrO's members currently produce over
95% of the electricity generated in Ontario.
